Study Guide for The Final Essay (UPDATED)

Things l learned from Tuesday’s final review session include:
  1. The blog summary is due on Jun 9th. It should include all the blog entries so far WITH pictures and sources. A summary of 300-500 words should be included as well. the summary should not be an overview but a summary of the synthesis with specific details.
  2. The final essay should be an expansion of one of the 9 topics we have covered in lectures. We are expect to connect a scientific innovation to an artist who works with the same subject and explain how that technology drives both art and science.
  3. The format and guidelines of bibliography and reference. The difference of those two is that reference should be in the same order as how I directly or indirectly quote the idea of another author, while the bibliography includes all the sources that support my ideas. Sources of pictures go into bibliography.
  4. There are many sources and websites recommended by TAs. Websites such as wikipedia or 9gaga should not be an appropriate source.
  5. TAs recommend student to discuss the materials of the essays with them in advance so they are able to know our ideas better and help us work things out.
  6. There are samples of previous work available on the websites.


My tentative schedule

May 25 - Jun 2. Brainstorm
Jun 3. Choose the idea and make an outline of the essay.
Jun 5-7. Discuss with TA either in person or through email.
Jun 10. Finish writing.

Jun 11. Proofread and submit.
Themes: MedTech and Art 

(Plastic Surgery, Diet, Beauty Standards.)

Approach: 

Beauty standards change over time. Nowadays, different countries and regions also have different beauty standards. (E.g. People in East Asian countries like pale skins and skinny bodies, while people here in North America lean towards getting tanned and toned up.)
To achieve their ideal appearances which fit the contemporary beauty standards, people have tried a lot of methods which include plastic surgery, diet food and slimming pills, etc. W

I narrowly defined cultures as norms and languages of different countries or districts until reading Snow’s work The Two Cultures and the Scientific Revolution , as I had never thought of that humanities and sciences could be addressed as cultures as well.   http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2008/05/26/science/27angi02_650.jpg In his work, Snow described how the two cultures, arts and sciences, had been separated for decades especially in England due to educational specializations. Week 3 - Robotics + Art

Week 6 - BioTech + Art

I have never thought of connecting BioTech with art before since obviously they are two completely different fields. But after watching this week’s videos, I realized that there are actually a lot of examples of the integration of BioTech and art which I have heard of or seen. The professor mentioned a great number of specific cases where artists entered the labs and collaborated with scientists to perform their unique ideas of combining Biotech and art. For example in 2000, the famous glowing rabbit was created in France by transferring green fluorine protein (GFP) gene into the cells of a rabbit.  GFP Bunny by Eduardo Kac Apparently, this glowing creature is not something that could be observed in the nature. Thus, this caused a lot of people’s concerns about outlaws biology experiments and some even compared it with committing a crime.
